Are there negative side effects to masturbating while fantasizing about people you know?

I’m 18, and for a few years, I’ve gotten used to fantasizing about girls that I know while masturbating. (I’m not crazy about using porn and fear that its usage could be bad for me in the long run, as I’ve read studies that say so.) But I’m a little worried because sometimes if I’m with a girl friend or see a girl that I find attractive, one of my first thoughts is that I’m going to fantasize about her. This, I fear, impairs my ability to form legitimate relationships (with girls) that aren’t contaminated by such prominent sexual urges. One of the girls that I’m closest – I can’t help but give into temptations to fantasize about her too. I don’t know if this tarnishes the legitimacy of our friendship. I understand that at my age, it is natural to think about sex a lot, but I’m going off to college next month, and I want to be able to form real friendships with girls. I don’t want to simply be hanging out with them because I want to have sex with them. So

– Is it psychologically unhealthy to fantasize about girls that I know while masturbating?

– Are my friendships with girls illegitimate because my sexual attraction to them is prominent?

Also, I’m currently trying out the 90-day challenge, when you try to not masturbate for 90 days. It’s difficult, but I’ve read some inspiring stories about successful participants. Could this improve or worsen my situation?

The problems you have mentioned are very common at your age. First of all, habit of too much masturbation is bad for health as it can deteriorate your sexual and general health in future. So try to avoid this habit as much as possible.

Secondly, we suggest you to think positive, innovative and do things that can help you in shaping your future. All these things will help to build confidence in you and will make a positive frame of mind towards all relationship you make.
